The story of Rani Mukerji-starrer is based on true events. In 2011, Norwegian Child Welfare Services, known as the Barnevernet (literally, “child protection”), took away Sagarika Bhattacharya’s children Aishwarya and Abhigyaan from their parents to take their care in a foster home until they became 18 years old. According to Barnevernet, the pair had been “under observation” for several months due to their “improper parenting”. The couple was accused of sleeping in the same bed as their kids, hand-feeding the kids—which Norwegian police viewed as force-feeding—and using corporal punishment (Sagarika had allegedly slapped the children once). While these actions may appear “natural” in the Indian setting, they were signs of cruelty to the Norwegian authorities. HERE COMES A TWIST! Debika gets a panic attack and she inconsolably cries at the foster care. This gives Velfred a chance to take advantage and prove her mentally unstable.
