‘Ferrari’ Review: Adam Driver in a Drama of Speed and Steel. Michael Mann directs this gripping film starring the actor as Italian carmaker Enzo Ferrari, focusing on his relentless professional ambitions and turbulent family life. How dangerous was racing cars in the 1950s? Dangerous enough that “Ferrari” features a montage of racers writing heartfelt farewell notes in case they shouldn’t return from the Mille Miglia (“thousand mile”), a high-speed endurance test in Italy that furnishes a gut-roiling climax to Michael Mann’s film.

As if to duplicate the struggles of his subject, Enzo Ferrari, who spent many years in purgatory before his surname became synonymous with luxury, styling and engineering prowess, Mr. Mann has been developing this project for more than 20 years. His screenwriter, Troy Kennedy Martin, died in 2009. Mr. Mann’s first choice to play the lead, Christian Bale, eventually backed off and made another movie about the same milieu, 2019’s “Ford v. Ferrari.”
