Sony’s “Hotel Transylvania 2” is outpacing its box office competition, the studio’s conservative projections for the sequel and the original film’s opening weekend numbers — the animated sequel looks poised to rake in upwards of $46 million in its first weekend.

Featuring the voice talents of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James and Keegan-Michael Key, “Hotel Transylvania 2” bowed Friday in 3,754 locations and generated $13 million in first-day receipts. The big weekend for “Hotel” will set a new record for a September opening, as well as a new record for Sony Pictures Animation’s best opening ever.
