In the new Marvel Studios blockbuster, Cobie stars as Commander Maria Hill, a highly trained weapons expert and hand-to-hand combatant who tries to save Earth from an invasion of shape-shifting aliens known as the Skrulls.

Commander Hill tries to maintain order by calling on Samuel L. Jackson’s character Nick Fury as the threat becomes imminent. The Skrulls are becoming increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress in finding a new home for their displaced population. While talking to Vanity Fair in March, Jackson described the Skrulls as innocent victims of a galactic war who needed help. Jackson explained that his character Fury is ‘trying to find them a place to live’. He added: ‘He promised them they would find them (the Skrulls) a planet or a place they could be. And it’s not going so well’. Fury addresses a Skrull named Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), who worked with humans to protect Earth in the 2019 film Captain Marvel and impersonated Fury at his request in Spider-Man: Far From Home, also released in 2019.

When Fury returns to Earth, he loses the powers he had. During a literal game of chess between Commander Hill and Fury, she warns him of the grave dangers they face. “You’re not ready for this Fury. There’s a very real threat out there,” she says.
