Shah Rukh Khan’s Happy New Year may have had a successful run at the box office, but it failed to break the opening weekend record of Salman Khan’s Kick, that released earlier this year. While SRK starrer Happy New Year grossed Rs 134 crore in the first week, Salman’s Kick record stands unbeaten at Rs 155 crore (net).

According to a Boxoffice India report, while the film did great business in Mumbai and Gujarat in the last week and is still going steady, it doesn’t seem to have as strong a grip on the box office as Kick did.

Directed by Farah Khan, Happy New Year, featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in lead roles had opened to mixed reviews. However, the film did enjoy a great opening.
According to a Box office India report, in its first four days, this heist film has grossed Rs 109 crore. The film managed to collect Rs 44.97 crore on the opening day and joined the Rs 100 crore club in just three days time. However, with Diwali holidays drawing to an end and schools and offices reopening, its Monday collections dropped drastically in the metros and East Punjab. Happy New Year minted just Rs 12.25 crore nett on Monday. On Tuesday, the film’s business was around Rs 11 crore. However, in the later part of the week there was an evident slump in the collections of Happy New Year. The film had a good run in the overseas market. Happy New Year’s worldwide figures stand at Rs 245 crore, which is the fourth highest total ever after Dhoom 3, Kick and Chennai Express.
It is also evident, that with no big releases in next couple of weeks, Happy New Year will have a smooth run at the box office and while it is undoubtedly a hit, this Shah Rukh Khan starrer isn’t the record breaking film, as it was touted to be.
