Being a high school kid is an adventure – especially when you gain superpowers. Check out the first Ms. Marvel trailer! Ms. Marvel – aka Kamala Khan – is a Pakistani-American teenager with shapeshifting ability thanks to her Inhuman genes. Kamala took up the mantle from Carol Danvers when she became Captain Marvel in 2013. It flew off the shelves and has become a fan favorite. The first volume of the comic won a Hugo award for Best Graphic Story in 2015 and it has won several awards since.

Ms. Marvel looks like a great mix of coming-of-age tale and superhero story – with a unique perspective. I’m loving the daydream sequences, comic book dialog bubbles, and drawn elements. The style reminds me a bit of Into the Spider-Verse and Scott Pilgrim.

There have been a few changes to her powers – it looks like she’ll be able to project large shapes instead of stretching like Mr. Fantastic. I’m betting the change was made for better TV visuals and to bring her closer to Captain Marvel’s power set. It’ll be interesting to see where her powers come from. She’s Inhuman in the books, but the MCU seems to be shying away from the concept in general.

Kamala is Marvel’s first Muslim character to star in her own title. Adding to the good the comic has done, this series – and the team selected to bring it to the screen – is a big step forward in the inclusion, visibility, and positive representation of Muslim and South Asian people in entertainment. And it looks amazing, to boot.
