The \u201cBarbie\u201d film and soundtrack album are such an embarrassment of riches that an equally massive bounty of Grammy and Academy awards seems like a foregone conclusion. But such awards don\u2019t just happen \u2014 it\u2019s an intricate, laborious, precisely timed dance of official submissions, lobbying, advertising campaigns and (so we\u2019ve heard) insider machinations less-than-lovingly known as \u201cFYC,\u201d i.e. For Your Consideration.<\/p>\n

So, Atlantic Records, which released the Mark Ronson-helmed \u201cBarbie the Album\u201d soundtrack, and Warner Bros. pictures have a challenge on their hands: Which songs to push for which awards, and which categories?<\/p>\n

Billie Eilish\u2019s \u201cWhat Was I Made For?\u201d may be the most musically resonant song in the film and album, but it\u2019s a melancholy one; conversely, Dua Lipa\u2019s disco-fied \u201cDance the Night\u201d is lighthearted fun personified and lights up the dance scenes, but it\u2019s maybe not as emotionally resonant. Nicki Minaj and Variety cover star Ice Spice\u2019s \u201cBarbie World\u201d features hot verses and an interpolation of Aqua\u2019s 1997 hit \u201cBarbie Girl\u201d (not to mention the subtext of Minaj\u2019s fans being called \u201cBarbz\u201d).\n<\/p><\/div>\n
