\u201cEverything Everywhere All at Once,\u201d a twisty sci-fi adventure, led the nominations for the 95th Academy Awards on Tuesday morning, picking up 11 nods. It was followed closely behind by \u201cAll Quiet on the Western Front,\u201d a World War I epic, and \u201cThe Banshees of Inisherin,\u201d a darkly comic look at friendship that unfolds against the backdrop of the Irish civil war, both of which scored nine nominations.<\/p>\n

All three films will vie for best picture, in what is shaping up to be a much more commercially-successful collection of honorees than recent years. The best picture race contains the two highest-grossing films of the year, \u201cAvatar: The Way of Water\u201d and \u201cTop Gun: Maverick,\u201d along with \u201cElvis,\u201d a musical biopic that scored with audiences last summer. Other contenders include Steven Spielberg\u2019s semi-autobiographical \u201cThe Fabelmans\u201d;\u201dT\u00e1r,\u201d a drama about an abusive conductor; \u201cWomen Talking,\u201d a look at the residents of a repressive religious community; and \u201cTriangle of Sadness,\u201d a send-up of the 1% that unfolds partly on a mega-yacht. \u201cTriangle of Sadness,\u201d one of the most divisive films of the year, had a strong showing on Tuesday morning, capturing nominations for his screenplay and for the direction of Ruben \u00d6stlund, the Swedish filmmaker who dreamed up the satire. He will compete for the director prize against Spielberg, Todd Field (\u201cT\u00e1r\u201d), Martin McDonagh (\u201cThe Banshees of Inisherin\u201d), and the directing duo of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (\u201cEverything Everywhere All at Once\u201d). It\u2019s a category dominated entirely by men. The last two best director winners, Jane Campion (\u201cThe Power of the Dog\u201d) and Chloe Zhao (\u201cNomadland\u201d), have been women, and there were some hopes that \u201cWomen Talking\u2019s\u201d Sarah Polley might nab a best director nod.<\/p>\n

The nominations were announced at a challenging time for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, the non-profit behind the awards, and the film business itself. Ratings for the Oscars have declined precipitously in recent years, imperiling the broadcast\u2019s licensing fees, the leading source of revenue for the Academy. At the same time, adult-oriented movies such as \u201cThe Fabelmans,\u201d \u201cT\u00e1r\u201d and \u201cThe Banshees of Inisherin\u201d have struggled at the box office during the pandemic. Exacerbating the situation is the fact that streaming services, which helped fill the void left by the decline in theatrical revenues by providing a platform (and a blank check) for the artists behind them, are also shifting their priorities. Netflix, for instance, has signaled to Wall Street that it will keep content spending relatively flat while it focuses on increasing profits.<\/p>\n

But everyone loves a comeback story, and this year\u2019s Oscar season has included several of them. Ke Huy Quan, a former child actor best known for his work in \u201cIndiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,\u201d earned a best supporting actor nomination for his work in \u201cEverything Everywhere All at Once.\u201d A few years ago, Quan had given up on acting, convinced that his career in front of the camera was over. There\u2019s also Brendan Fraser, a former action star whose career was derailed by health issues and personal struggles, but who has re-emerged as a powerful character actor with a transformative turn as a morbidly obese man in \u201cThe Whale.\u201d He earned a nomination for best actor.<\/p>\n

Both Fraser and Quan will spend the morning fielding congratulatory calls. Others won\u2019t have much to celebrate. That\u2019s because many of the year\u2019s most heralded performances, a group that includes Viola Davis in \u201cThe Woman King,\u201d Brad Pitt in \u201cBabylon\u201d and Danielle Deadwyler in \u201cTill,\u201d failed to make the final crop of contenders.<\/p>\n

And there were some surprise inclusions, perhaps none more stunning than Andrea Riseborough, whose performance as an alcoholic woman in the little-seen indie \u201cTo Leslie\u201d scored her a best actress nomination. Her candidacy was helped by an advocacy campaign involving A-list supporters such as Edward Norton, Gwyneth Paltrow, Charlize Theron and Cate Blanchett, who was also nominated for her performance in \u201cT\u00e1r.\u201d Riseborough and Blanchett join a best actress race that includes Ana de Armas (\u201cBlonde\u201d), Michelle Williams (\u201cThe Fabelmans\u201d) and Michelle Yeoh (\u201cEverything Everywhere All at Once\u201d).<\/p>\n

In addition to Fraser, the best actor race includes Austin Butler (\u201cElvis\u201d), Colin Farrell (\u201cThe Banshees of Inisherin\u201d), Bill Nighy (\u201cLiving\u201d) and Paul Mescal (\u201cAftersun\u201d). All five actors are first-time nominees, a distinction that they share with Yeoh, de Armas and Riseborough. Blanchett has won two Oscars and been nominated eight times. \u201cThe Fabelmans\u201d marks Williams\u2019 fifth nomination.<\/p>\n

Jimmy Kimmel will return to host the Oscars, marking the late night comic\u2019s third stint as emcee. He previously led the awards show in 2017 and 2018. Last year, the Oscars returned to a host format with Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall, after going host-less the previous two years. The 95th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 12, 2023, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will be televised live on ABC.<\/p>\n
