From visionary director Robert Eggers comes The Northman, an action-filled epic that follows a young Viking prince on his quest to avenge his father’s murder. Describing \u201cThe Northman\u201d as director Robert Eggers’ most accessible film verges on misleading. The filmmaker’s prior works\u2014the puritanical hallucinations of \u201cThe Witch\u201d and the desolate, mermaid fetishization of \u201cThe Lighthouse\u201d\u2014traded in traditional macabre American folklore for unconventional, ambient freak-outs. \u201cThe Northman\u201d repeats the best instincts of those films, though to lesser effect. It demands audiences deconstruct overbearing patriarchal values, toxic masculine heroism, and the folly of revenge by pulling viewers through extreme devotion to familial honor. Eggers\u2019 brand of psychological shock is bolder here than his prior works and potent in bursts, but barely works on boldness alone.<\/div>\n
