Netflix has unveiled the first look at its upcoming cyberpunk show Altered Carbon. In a world inspired by Richard K. Morgan\u2019s 2002 noir science fiction novel, a soldier is brought back to life to investigate a rich man\u2019s murder. The show will begin streaming on February 2nd, 2018.<\/p>\nThe trailer introduces the novel\u2019s central McGuffin: in Morgan\u2019s version of the future, people can digitally copy their memories and personalities into a \u201ccortical stack\u201d and implant them in a new body, called a sleeve. The process allows people (usually the rich and famous) to avoid death by jumping from body to body. Last week, Netflix began teasing the show with a couple of in-universe teasers for Psychasec, the company responsible for \u201csleeving\u201d people.<\/p>\n
In Morgan\u2019s novel, a dead soldier named Takeshi Kovacs (Suicide Squad\u2019s Joel Kinnaman), is brought back to life centuries after his mind was imprisoned \u201con ice.\u201d Earth\u2019s wealthiest man, Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy) hires him for an unusual task: someone murdered Bancroft\u2019s previous body, and the new version wants Kovacs to track down the killer. As he takes on the case, Kovacs begins to realize that his own past might be relevant. The novel was followed by two sequels, Broken Angels and Woken Furies, which gives Netflix plenty of options for future seasons.<\/p>\n
The trailer offers up some glimpses of the novel\u2019s cyberpunk world: there\u2019s plenty of neon lighting, some action, and Kinnaman explaining, \u201cThe danger of living too many times: you forget to fear death.\u201d<\/p>\n
Altered Carbon begins streaming on Netflix on February 2nd, 2018.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
